Mrs. Debra E. Shapiro, DTE, Forest Glen Middle School’s Technology and Engineering teacher, attended the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA) Conference in Orlando, Florida the week of March 7, 2022. During the week long conference Mrs. Shapiro fulfilled her duties as the organization’s President Elect during the pre-conference Board of Directors meeting, training organization leaders during the Leadership Breakfast, recognizing outstanding undergraduate students and Distinguished Technology Educators (DTE), and presenting Teacher Excellence and Reach Challenge awards. One of her favorite parts of the conference she was able to participate in was a new activity called Speed Mentoring where experienced educators mentored pre-service Technology and Engineering teachers in Speed Dating fashion.

Mrs. Shapiro had the opportunity to participate in culminating activities with her 2021-22 21st Leadership Academy (21CLA) Cohort. They started their activities with an Escape Room activity where they had to defuse a nuclear bomb to save the world through a number fo problem solving activities. The cohort then participated in a workshop for future planning with creating and sharing a five year plan that included personal and professional goals and writing their retirement announcements. No, Mrs. Shapiro is not retiring! It was just an exercise to plan their future and take an imaginary look back at what they hope to accomplish before they retire! The members also greeted the participants of the next cohort and talked to other potential participants about the 21CLA program and its benefits during the STEM Showcase presentations. On Friday they presented research they completed in Cracking the STEL Code: Implementing the ITEEA Standards for Technology and Engineering Literacy.

Mrs. Shapiro finalized her week on Saturday at the Awards Brunch being installed as President of ITEEA where she gave her president’s message sharing her experiences as a member of ITEEA and outlining her plan to increase membership and volunteerism in the organization. A colleague stated, “Congratulations! Virginia already knows you're a Rockstar, now the world will!” The afternoon was completed with the post conference Board of Directors meeting with a review of conference activities and feedback from members and planning for the upcoming year. During a cultural gift exchange, Shapiro shared Planters Peanuts, a Funko Pop Mr. Peanut, and a book authored and autographed by ITEEA member and Suffolk resident Dr. Maurice Frazier to represent her adopted home of Suffolk.

Mrs. Shapiro will lead the ITEEA BoD in their meetings, financial planning, and other activities for the upcoming year and culminate her presidency at the 85th Annual ITEEA Conference in Minneapolis, MN in April 2023 where she will take on the role of Immediate Past President.
